Do cover letters still matter in 2026?

Yes — but only when they're short, specific, and tied to one company. Generic letters get skimmed in 5 seconds. A good cover letter doubles your callback rate for any role where the application asks for one.

The 4-paragraph formula

1. The hook (2–3 lines)

Lead with a specific reason you're writing — a product you use, a recent launch, a metric from their last earnings report. Skip "I am writing to apply for..."

2. Why you (3–4 lines)

Pick the one achievement from your resume that maps to their top need. Quantify it.

3. Why them (2–3 lines)

Show you understand their business — not their about page. Reference a real challenge or opportunity in their market.

4. The close (1–2 lines)

Concrete next step. "I'd welcome a 20-minute call to share how I'd approach [specific problem]."

Copy-paste template

Hi [Hiring Manager Name],

I've been a [Product] user since 2023 and noticed your recent push into [market]. The activation problem you described in [podcast/post] is exactly what I solved at [Previous Company].

At [Company], I led [project] that lifted [metric] from X to Y in [timeframe]. The same playbook — [specific tactic] — would translate directly to your [role focus].

[One specific reason you want to work there, tied to their strategy not their perks.]

Happy to share a 90-second Loom on how I'd approach [specific problem in the JD]. Either way, thanks for reading.

Mistakes that get you skipped

  • Re-stating your resume in paragraph form
  • "I am a results-driven team player passionate about..."
  • More than 250 words
  • Addressing it "To Whom It May Concern" (find a name on LinkedIn)
  • Talking about what the job will do for you, not what you'll do for them

Send one whenever the application allows it, even if optional. About 35% of recruiters say a tailored cover letter changed their decision in the last 12 months.

How long should a cover letter be?

150–250 words. Anything over a page is skimmed or skipped entirely.

Can I use AI to write my cover letter?
